History of Garfield
County: Garfield County is the eighth most extensive and the twelfth most populous of the 64 counties in the state of Colorado. Garfield County was established February 10, 1883 and named in honor of President James A. Garfield with Carbonate, high on the Flat Tops, as the county seat. On November 6, 1883, voters approved moving the Garfield County seat from Carbonate to Glenwood Springs when it became apparent that winters were far too harsh in Carbonate (and that the precious ores found "salted" at the site were actually a hoax).
Garfield County encompasses 2,956 square miles with 9 square miles of water with a population of approximately 52,189 in 2006. 1,134,173 acres, or about 60% of all Garfield County lands are federally owned.
