History of Garfield County: Garfield County is the eighth most extensive and the twelfth most populous of the 64 counties in the state of Colorado. Garfield County was established February 10, 1883 and named in honor of President James A. Garfield with Carbonate, high on the Flat Tops, as the county seat.
